5 years ago, the moment I saw that plane crash into the first tower and realized it wasn't an accident, I remember hearing the lyrics of that R.E.M. song in my head, once the initial shock was over.
Our world didn't change with the dawn of the new Millennium. It dramatically went backwards then.
I loved the old world better. You know, the one where everything was more fun, decadent, irreverent, politically incorrect, free. The one when there wasn't so much fear, religious fanaticism, darkness and war everywhere.
Sure, it was far from ideal and rosy. But you have to admit this new world is a pretty dark place to live in.
Strangely, today is a beautiful sunny day like it was 5 years ago.
I heard planes flying over Paris 30 minutes ago. 5 years ago, whenever I heard planes, I knew it was the Patrouille de France (flying virtuosos from the French Air Force) practising. Now, I always check out what's going on and fear it's a highjacking of some sort.
Oh, and have you heard that story about a documentary about 9/11 which could be censored because of the language used by the rescue teams and firemen ? Have people lost all sense of reality ? Should firemen say "oopsie, more dead bodies" instead of "fuck, more dead bodies" ? What's really shocking here ? Dead, mangled, burnt bodies or hearing people cursing ?
I'm sick of that world. We're becoming what the terrorists want us to become : a bunch of tight-laced, terrorised bunch of wimps who blush when they hear "fuck" and see a nipple.
Blythou out.
